Origins
Amagi Art is inspired by the Sumerian word 'amagi,' The word originates from the noun ama "mother"and the present participle gi "return, restore, put back", thus literally meaning "returning to mother". Assyriologists have identified it as the first known written reference to the concept of freedom. Amagi written in cuneiform 𒂼𒄄 was inscribed in cuneiform tablets to indicate when a human was released from enslavement. In this word the image of humanity freeing itself from enslavement to a way of living that no longer serves life is beheld. In returning to the mother, we free ourselves from enslavement to a system that that does not resonate with the truth of humanity's heart and soul.
The works of Amagi Art are sourced from elements of nature and the focus of the work is to bring to life sacred totems that appear when nature is mirrored. The inspiration for this work comes from life and being, both cosmic and terrestrial. Amagi Art prints start with a photograph, continue with various digital editing techniques, and are concluded when the viewer receives whatever messages the sacred totems reveal.
These totems are inspired by the mysterious beauty of the natural world, both cosmic and terrestrial. In mirroring nature, we come to see the intelligence of creation in its infinite beauty. When we look upon nature mirrored, we are presented with totems that make it clear to us that our existence is more mysterious than we routinely imagine. When we contemplate on the beautiful, awe-inspiring symmetry presented to us in these nature totems, we are reminded of our own beauty. We are reminded that the beauty we see in the natural world, in the night sky, and in our dreams is the same beauty contained within our shared, sacred being.
May these images help us to remember who and what we truly are: manifestations of infinite intelligence and natural living beings of this earth, ever becoming in now's eternal movement.
